Living in a high-rise is a dream of many as it’s a different feeling overall. It feels like you are sitting at the top of the world enjoying a bird’s-eye view. True, everyone wants to dream big and live life, kingsize but in order to live that life one needs to be very careful as well. Generally speaking those buildings that can endure the gravity loads and the possible actions of wind, earthquake, without any damage in the major structural mechanism are considered to be the safest ones. Now, when you are buying in a high-rise building, the satisfactory performance needs a very important attention. While building a high-rise structure one needs to inform the occupants about the limit state of durability and serviceability before handing over the apartment.
I can relate a familiar situation while discussing the safety features of high-rise buildings. There was a friend of mine who used to dream about investing in a high-rise building and so he bought a premium flat in Kolkata. However, he was a bit confused about the safety features which I managed to explain him, thereby, making things easy.
Here are some of the Safety Features of a High-rise Building
To be precise, safety refers to different categories like safety against vibration, cracking, deflection, fire resistance, the collapse of the building’s structural components and so on. In general, safety refers to the security against any kind of collapse like breakage or failure of the structural components and so on.
Make a Fire Safety Plan
Like the low-rise apartment building or single-family home, the high-rise dwellers too must have a home fire safety plan. Do meet with the neighbours of your floor and coordinate accordingly regarding how to evacuate during problems. Know the exit areas properly which should be marked, so that there is no problem during an emergency.
Meet With Management
Arrange a meeting with your building manager or the concerned person regarding the safety issues. This meeting would help in informing all about the evacuation procedures and fire safety feature of the building. Check whether the building you are staying has a full fire sprinkler system. Make sure, there is fire drill session arranged on a regular basis.
Check the Alarm
Ensure that the fire alarm works immediately, whenever there is an emergency. There should be dummy sessions in order to understand the real situation if ever it occurs.
Take the Stairs
If there is fire alarm ringing, never use elevators instead use the stairways to exit. You never know when the elevators would start malfunctioning, thus, pushing you in more trouble.
Hope, the above-mentioned discussion was helpful to you and will now prepare you before you opt for a high-rise building to stay.
